Australia‘s star batter, Steve Smith, has been omitted from the playing XI for the first T20I against New Zealand, signaling a potential change in strategy for the team. Despite his impressive performances in Test and ODI cricket, Smith’s struggles in the T20 format have led to his exclusion. With a modest average of 25.69 and a strike rate of 125.17 in 65 T20Is, Smith’s place in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup could be in jeopardy.

Mitchell Marsh’s reaction on Steve Smith’s place in the Australian team

Australian captain Mitchell Marsh emphasized the team’s focus on winning the series against New Zealand while hinting at experimenting with different combinations. Marsh acknowledged the importance of finding the right balance ahead of the T20 World Cup, suggesting that Smith’s absence in the playing XI is part of the team’s strategy to finalize their best lineup for the tournament.

“There will be certain guys that probably bat in different positions than they have done in the past, but ultimately we’re here to win the series,” Marsh said in response to a query about Smith’s role vs NZ, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

Michael Vaughan has his say on Steve Smith’s role in the T20I side

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan weighed in on Smith’s role in the T20 side, emphasizing the importance of utilizing him as an opener for maximum impact. Vaughan suggested that Smith’s ability to capitalize on the field restrictions during the powerplay overs makes him a valuable asset at the top of the order. However, Vaughan expressed doubts about Smith’s effectiveness in the middle order, highlighting the need for players who can accelerate the scoring rate in the latter stages of the innings.

“I think his only position really is to open, because he has the skill in the game to maximise that first six overs brilliantly. He is a skilful player. But if he is not going to open, I don’t think he should play. If you are going to play him, he bats in the top two, and that is great. He will face 50 balls and get you an 80 or 90,” stated Vaughan in his conversation with the Fox Sports.

“If he is not going to open, I don’t see him having an impact in the middle order after the powerplay. You need people who can whack it into the stands from (overs) six to 20. He can do that once he is in, but I think he is a better player in the first six (overs) when there are only two men outside the circle,” the ex-England skipper added.

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly reacts to Rohit Sharma’s appointment as Team India skipper for T20 World Cup 2024 https://crickettimes.com/2024/02/former-bcci-president-sourav-ganguly-reacts-to-rohit-sharmas-appointment-as-team-india-skipper-for-t20-world-cup-2024/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 09:32:00 +0000 https://crickettimes.com/?p=123997

In a delightful turn of events for Indian cricket fans, modern-day cricketing stalwart Rohit Sharma was recently appointed as the captain for Team India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The announcement, made by BCCI secretary Jay Shah during the renaming ceremony of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, was met with immense joy and excitement and came just a day before the India-England Rajkot Test, where Rohit showcased his brilliance and went on to score a sensational century for India.

Social media platforms erupted with congratulatory messages and best wishes for Rohit, reflecting the widespread happiness among cricket enthusiasts. However, some fans were also left puzzled by the sudden decision.

Fans divided over Rohit Sharma’s appointment as Team India skipper

Amidst the debates and discussions related to Rohit’s appointment as Team India skipper for the T20 World Cup 2024, former BCCI president and cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly shared his insightful perspective on Rohit’s being entrusted for the captaincy role.

Sourav Gangly shares his views on Rohit taking the helm as captain

A stalwart of Indian cricket who played a crucial role in transforming the team during his captaincy and later as an administrator, Ganguly unequivocally backed Rohit as the ‘best choice’ for the captaincy role.

Expressing his views, Ganguly also pointed to Rohit’s stellar performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, where he guided India to 10 consecutive victories, capturing the hearts of fans both in India and around the world. Despite falling short in the final, Ganguly believes that Rohit’s leadership in the T20 World Cup 2024 could bring triumph for India.

“Rohit Sharma is the right choice as Captain for the T20 World Cup 2024, the way he led the Team India & won 10 matches in World Cup 2023 is still fresh in our memory – so Rohit is the Best choice to lead India,” Ganguly told Mid-Day.

Rohit’s sensational comeback to T20Is

It’s noteworthy that despite being absent from T20I action for nearly a year since 2022, Rohit recently made a remarkable comeback in the format, smashing a century against Afghanistan and securing the record for the most centuries by a batter in T20Is (later matched by Glenn Maxwell). With Rohit back at the helm of the team for an ICC event, anticipation is high, and fans are eagerly awaiting the global spectacle.

NZ vs AUS: Captain Mitchell Marsh reveals Australia’s top 3 ahead of T20I series against New Zealand https://crickettimes.com/2024/02/nz-vs-aus-captain-mitchell-marsh-reveals-australias-top-3-ahead-of-t20i-series-against-new-zealand/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 08:40:01 +0000 https://crickettimes.com/?p=123989

Cricket enthusiasts around the globe are buzzing with excitement as one of the most riveting rivalries in international cricket reignites with the upcoming Trans-Tasman T20I series between Australia and New Zealand. This fiercely contested battle between two cricketing powerhouses not only promises high-octane action but also sets the stage for an exhilarating display of skill, strategy, and sheer determination.

Ahead of the highly anticipated battle of the shortest format, Australian T20I captain Mitchell Marsh has shed light on his team’s batting lineup, setting the stage for an exciting clash with their trans-Tasman rivals.

Mitchell Marsh confirms the top 3

Marsh’s revelation confirms that Australia’s top three spots are firmly established, with himself set to bat third, while Travis Head and David Warner will open the innings. This trio has showcased exceptional synergy and performance in past encounters, instilling confidence in their roles leading up to the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“I’ve batted three for the last 18 months, so I’ll be there to start with. And obviously Heady and Davey Warner have been amazing for us over the last period of time, so I daresay that will be the top three,” said Marsh as quoted by cricket.com.au.

Squad rotation and middle-order mysteries

While Marsh acknowledged the stability of the top order, he hinted at potential squad rotation during the New Zealand series, keeping the competition within the 15-member squad fierce. However, he remained tight-lipped about the middle-order lineup and notably did not disclose Steve Smith‘s position, adding an element of intrigue to the team’s strategy.

“You’ll have to find out, we’ll announce our team at the toss. There will be certain guys that probably bat in different positions than they have done in the past, but ultimately, we’re here to win the series,” explained Marsh.

Marsh’s perspective on batting depth

Expressing confidence in Australia’s batting depth, Marsh emphasized the team’s ability to sustain pressure and continue attacking, even in the face of early setbacks. He praised the resilience of the batting lineup, noting their capacity to apply pressure throughout the innings, backed by a lineup that extends deep into the batting order.

“I thought the way we batted was really impressive, in terms of our ability to just keep going. There were moments when we lost early wickets but one of the things I want from us is to make sure we’re backing our skill no matter what. That may look ugly at times, but I think we’ve got a team that bats right down to eight or nine and can really apply pressure with the bat,” added Marsh.
