The extended absence of Ishan Kishan from the Indian cricket squad has raised eyebrows and led to speculation about his future with the team. Rahul Dravid, the head coach of Team India, recently addressed this matter during a press conference, shedding light on Kishan’s situation and the team’s approach towards his absence.

Ishan Kishan’s recent absence and requested break

Kishan, who made his Test debut in the West Indies last year, has been noticeably absent from the squad. He was part of the T20I squad during India’s tour of South Africa but didn’t get any game. Following which, the Patna-born was released from the squad for the Test leg and wasn’t picked for the first two Tests against England. Not to mention, this absence followed a request for a personal break, which prompted his exclusion from the squad.

Rahul Dravid’s perspective on Kishan’s return

When questioned about Kishan’s absence and the possibility of his return to the squad, Dravid provided insights into the team’s stance. He emphasized the potential for any player to stage a comeback, highlighting the importance of readiness through consistent cricketing activity.

“There’s a way back for anyone and everyone. It’s not that we rule out anybody from anything. I just don’t want to go on labouring about the Ishan Kishan point. I’ve tried to explain it as best as I can. The point was that, you know, he requested a break. We were happy to give him the break and whenever he was ready… I didn’t say he has to play domestic cricket. I said, whenever he’s ready he needs to play some cricket and come back, and the choice is his,” said Dravid in the presser.

Future considerations and selection process

Dravid revealed that the team management remains in contact with Kishan but refrained from making definitive statements due to Kishan’s current lack of playing time. With Rishabh Pant sidelined due to injury, Dravid acknowledged the availability of alternative options within the squad.

Dravid reiterated that the decision regarding Kishan’s return ultimately lies with the player himself. He emphasized the importance of Kishan being prepared to make a comeback, emphasizing that the team management would respect his timeline for readiness.

“We’re not forcing him to do anything and we are in touch with him. It’s not that we’re not in touch. We know what it is, but he hasn’t yet started playing, right? So, at the moment, it’s not something that we would consider because, you know, he’s maybe not ready. He decides when he wants to be ready and we’ve got options obviously with Rishabh [Pant] injured and stuff. So I’m sure the selectors will weigh all the options,” added Dravid.

Notably, Kishan last played for Team India in the third T20I against Australia in Guwahati where he was dismissed for a 5-ball duck. Overall, the Jharkhand cricketer has played 2 Tests, 27 ODIs and 32 T20Is for Team India.
